Mali Defence Minister Killed in Suspected Al-Qaeda Attack Near Bamako – Report
Mali’s Defence Minister has reportedly been killed in an attack linked to an Al-Qaeda-affiliated militant group near the capital, Bamako, according to reports by Radio France Internationale (RFI).
Security sources cited by RFI say the attack occurred on the outskirts of Bamako, an area previously considered relatively secure compared to the country’s volatile northern and central regions. The assault is believed to have been carried out by fighters linked to Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda-aligned coalition active across the Sahel.
While Malian authorities have yet to officially confirm the death at the time of reporting, multiple regional and security sources indicate that the minister’s convoy was ambushed, resulting in heavy casualties among security personnel. The incident marks a significant escalation in militant activity close to the seat of government.
Mali has been battling Islamist insurgencies for over a decade, with armed groups affiliated with both Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State exploiting weak governance and vast ungoverned territories. In recent years, the country’s military-led government has intensified operations against insurgents while also shifting alliances away from Western partners.
The reported killing of such a high-ranking official underscores growing concerns about the reach and sophistication of militant groups, particularly as attacks increasingly target strategic and political figures. Analysts warn that if confirmed, the incident could have serious implications for national security and the stability of the transitional government.
Authorities are expected to release an official statement as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
