Maritime Firm Sues Navy, AGF Over Vessel, Seeks ₦771m Damages
A Lagos-based maritime company has filed a ₦771 million lawsuit against the Nigerian Navy and the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) over an alleged unlawful auction and continued detention of its vessel
The firm, identified as Sea Delights Marine Wreckage Limited, approached the Federal High Court seeking damages, claiming that its vessel was wrongfully auctioned and withheld despite prior legal processes.
According to court filings, the dispute centers on the handling and sale of the vessel, which the company insists was carried out without proper adherence to due process. The claimant is demanding ₦771 million in damages for losses allegedly incurred as a result of the actions of the Navy and the AGF.
The case adds another layer to an ongoing legal battle involving the vessel. Earlier in 2026, a Federal High Court in Lagos ordered the Nigerian Navy to release a detained vessel linked to the same company after prolonged legal contention.

Legal experts note that disputes involving vessel seizure, auction, and ownership fall under admiralty jurisdiction, which is handled exclusively by the Federal High Court in Nigeria. Such cases often arise from enforcement actions, unpaid liabilities, or conflicting ownership claims.
The defendants; the Nigerian Navy and the AGF, are yet to publicly respond to the fresh suit as of the time of filing.
The outcome of the case could have broader implications for maritime operations, particularly regarding enforcement procedures, vessel auctions, and the protection of private maritime assets in Nigerian waters.
