Sanwo-Olu Approves N50,000 Relief Package for Lagos Workers
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved a N50,000 relief package for workers in Lagos State as part of measures to cushion the effects of rising economic hardship.
The governor announced the intervention on Friday during the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, with the theme “Insecurity, Poverty – Bane of Decent Work.”
Represented by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, Sanwo-Olu said the payment would be added to workers’ May salaries and could be reviewed in subsequent months.
He described the initiative as part of the state government’s commitment to supporting workers across sectors, noting that Lagos’ growth is driven by the contributions of teachers, healthcare workers, artisans, and civil servants.
“For this May, there will be an additional N50,000 for every worker in Lagos State, across board, irrespective of grade,” he said.
The governor acknowledged ongoing economic challenges, including inflation and global energy shocks, stressing the need for practical government interventions to ease the burden on workers.
Sanwo-Olu also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare, infrastructure, and service delivery, while maintaining open engagement with organised labour to ensure industrial harmony.
On security, he emphasised that safety remains critical to productivity, noting that investments in surveillance systems, community policing, and other security infrastructure are ongoing to create a safer environment.
He added that his administration would prioritise the completion of key projects, including transport infrastructure, housing, and pension obligations, before the end of its tenure, stressing that success would be measured by tangible results rather than promises.
