At least 36 soldiers and Mobile Police officers were reportedly killed after suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched coordinated midnight attacks on two military formations in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.

The attacks, which occurred around 1 a.m. on Friday, targeted the Theatre Training Centre in Buniyadi and the 27 Task Force Brigade in Buni Gari, both located in Governor Mai Mala Buni’s home area.

Military sources said the insurgents attacked both camps almost simultaneously, triggering intense gun battles that reportedly lasted several hours.

A soldier who survived the assault said the attackers overwhelmed sections of the formations during the operation.

“My camp was attacked by Boko Haram. In 27 Task Force Brigade Buni Gari, three soldiers were killed in action and the attack started around 1 a.m. The insurgents were attacking us while also attacking the neighbouring camp,” the source said.

Another security source confirmed that the Theatre Training Centre in Buniyadi, where soldiers and Mobile Police officers were undergoing training, suffered heavier casualties.

According to the source, 17 Mobile Police officers, 10 soldiers undergoing training, and six soldiers permanently deployed at the facility were reportedly killed during the attack.

The source added that the 27 Task Force Brigade lost at least three personnel during the assault.

The attacks are believed to be among the deadliest assaults on security formations in the North-East in recent months and have renewed concerns over the persistent activities of insurgent groups in the region.

The coordinated nature of the operation has also raised fears about the growing operational capacity of insurgents despite repeated claims by authorities that terrorist groups have been significantly weakened.
