Political Realignment in Kano as Yusuf Consults Tinubu, Secures Kwankwaso’s Support
The Kano State Government has confirmed that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf consulted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu before making moves to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), with the backing of former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Speaking on behalf of the state government, the governor’s spokesperson said the consultation with the president was part of ongoing high-level political engagements aimed at repositioning Kano State within Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
According to multiple reports, Yusuf’s potential defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the APC has been under discussion for weeks, amid growing speculation of internal divisions within the NNPP and shifting alliances ahead of future elections.
Sources indicate that Kwankwaso, the national leader of the NNPP and Yusuf’s political mentor, has given his blessing to the move after strategic consultations. While neither Yusuf nor Kwankwaso has publicly confirmed a finalized defection, insiders suggest that the discussions are at an advanced stage.
The spokesperson emphasized that any political decision taken by the governor would be in the best interest of Kano residents, particularly in securing stronger federal collaboration and access to developmental resources.
Political analysts say the development, if confirmed, could significantly reshape Kano’s political structure, considering the state’s electoral importance in northern Nigeria. A move by Yusuf to the APC could also strengthen President Tinubu’s influence in the region while weakening opposition platforms.
However, opposition voices have criticized the alleged move, describing it as a betrayal of the mandate given to the NNPP during the last election cycle. Some party loyalists have also expressed concerns over what they see as a growing trend of political defections driven by power consolidation rather than ideology.
As of now, there has been no official announcement confirming the defection, but the revelation of consultations with the presidency has intensified speculation of an imminent political shift in Kano State.
