Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has appointed actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo as his spokesperson, in a move seen as part of efforts to strengthen his political communication team ahead of the 2027 general election.

Okonkwo announced the appointment on Thursday through a statement posted on his official X account, expressing gratitude to Atiku for entrusting him with the role despite their recent differences over the party’s vice-presidential nomination.

“I give God all the glory to be appointed by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar as his Spokesperson. I thank HE AA for the immense confidence reposed in me,” Okonkwo stated.

He described the appointment as a reflection of Atiku’s leadership style, noting that the former vice president encourages dialogue rather than punishing associates who express dissenting views.

“Rather than pick offence against any of his associates for expressing genuine reservations of any action taken, HE AA always opts for dialogue and compromise that will engender solution to problems,” he said.

Okonkwo revealed that discussions with Atiku and other leaders of the African Democratic Congress had addressed concerns about the political interests of the South-East despite challenges posed by the Electoral Act, 2026.

According to him, the region’s interests have been considered within the realities of the current legal and political landscape.

The newly appointed spokesperson also acknowledged the contributions of Dr. Kashim Imam, former ADC National Chairman Ralphs Nwosu, and Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Dr. Ekene Onwuka, for their efforts in strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

He further thanked his family, supporters and friends for their prayers and encouragement, saying he would rely on divine wisdom and courage to discharge his responsibilities.

The appointment comes weeks after Okonkwo openly criticised the ADC’s choice of vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 presidential election, arguing that selecting a candidate from the South-South would further deepen the exclusion of the South-East from Nigeria’s two highest political offices.

Despite the earlier disagreement, the ADC subsequently confirmed former Rotimi Amaechi as Atiku’s running mate after Atiku emerged as the party’s presidential candidate.

Political observers say Okonkwo’s appointment signals efforts by Atiku’s camp to foster unity within the party and consolidate support as preparations intensify for the 2027 presidential election.
