The Oyo State Government has suspended all school excursions, field trips, sports competitions, and other outdoor activities following the killing of a teacher and the abduction of students and staff by armed bandits in the Oriire Local Government Area of the state.

The decision came as family members, colleagues, and sympathisers gathered in Ogbomoso on Friday to bury slain teacher, Adesiyan Adegboye, who was killed during the coordinated attacks on schools in the area last week.

Adegboye, 49, was laid in state at Ayegun Baptist Church before being buried at his residence in the Owolake area of Ogbomoso.

The deceased was among victims killed when armed bandits invaded Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, Community Grammar School, and L.A. Primary School, Esiele, last Friday.

Several students and teachers were reportedly abducted during the attacks, triggering panic across Ogbomoso and neighbouring communities as worried parents rushed to withdraw their children from schools over fears of further violence.

The incident also sparked rumours that bandits had infiltrated the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), claims later dismissed by the institution’s management.

In response to the growing security concerns, the Oyo State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology announced sweeping safety measures affecting both public and private schools across the state.

In a circular signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, B.T. Oyinloye, school authorities were directed to suspend all activities requiring students to leave school premises until further notice.

“In view of the recent security concerns, the Ministry is taking steps to safeguard the lives of students and members of staff in all schools in Oyo State,” the circular stated.

“All School Administrators are hereby directed to suspend all excursions, field trips, sports competitions, and any other activities that require moving students outside school premises until further notice.”

The ministry further stated that all previous approvals granted for such activities had been withdrawn with immediate effect.

School administrators were also instructed to ensure students remain within school premises during school hours and to promptly report suspicious movements or activities around schools to security agencies.

The directive, according to the ministry, will remain in force pending improvements in the security situation across affected communities.

The latest measures come amid heightened fears over the safety of students and teachers in schools across Oyo State following the deadly Ogbomoso abduction incident.
