Amaechi Rejects ADC Presidential Primary Results, Alleges Irregularities
Former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has rejected the outcome of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary election, alleging widespread irregularities and voter disenfranchisement during the exercise.
Amaechi, who contested for the party’s presidential ticket, described the announced results as “concocted” and insisted that the process failed to meet the standards of transparency and fairness promised by the party leadership.
In a statement released shortly after the primaries, the former minister said he had earlier made it clear that he would only accept the outcome if the exercise was free, fair, and credible. According to him, the conduct of the election fell far below democratic expectations.
Amaechi alleged that a large percentage of party members were prevented from participating in the voting process, raising serious concerns about the legitimacy of the primary. He argued that a party that regularly criticises the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over alleged electoral malpractice should not engage in similar actions internally.
The development has reportedly deepened tensions within the ADC ahead of the 2027 general elections, with reports indicating that another aspirant, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, also rejected the outcome of the primaries over alleged vote manipulation and irregularities.
Political observers say the controversy could pose a major challenge to the ADC’s efforts to position itself as a strong opposition platform ahead of the next presidential election. The party leadership is yet to issue a comprehensive response to the allegations raised by the aggrieved aspirants.
