The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has formally moved into campaign mode ahead of the 2027 general elections, directing its candidates across the country to commence consultations and campaign activities.

The directive followed the commencement of the statutory campaign period in line with the timetable of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In a statement issued in Abuja by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the NDC said all its candidates, particularly those contesting the presidential and National Assembly elections, should immediately begin engaging their constituents.

The party also directed its state and local government chapters, as well as ward structures, to organise campaign activities and develop itineraries for their respective areas.

The development effectively places the NDC’s 2027 campaign machinery on a more active footing, with presidential candidate Peter Obi, vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso and other candidates expected to intensify consultations ahead of the election.

The party had previously denied reports of a rift between Obi and Kwankwaso over the composition of its campaign council, insisting that both leaders and other stakeholders were working together to build a formidable campaign structure.

The NDC said it would soon announce the composition of its campaign organs and subsequently inaugurate the committees.

According to the party, the campaign structure is expected to coordinate activities at different levels as candidates take their messages to constituents nationwide.

The party also directed its members to continue using its existing logo, featuring the two-finger victory sign, until the ongoing process with INEC concerning the party’s identity is completed.

While announcing the commencement of campaign activities, the NDC cautioned its candidates and supporters against violence, hate speech, abusive language and inflammatory rhetoric.

The party said its campaigns should remain focused on issues and policies rather than personal attacks.

It urged candidates to engage voters on their proposed solutions to Nigeria’s economic, security and social challenges and to conduct their activities within the provisions of the law.

The directive comes as political parties across Nigeria begin intensifying preparations for the 2027 elections.

The campaign mobilisation is coming alongside the NDC’s efforts to strengthen internal cohesion following its primaries and nationwide congresses.

The party recently inaugurated a National Reconciliation Committee chaired by Professor Pat Utomi, with veteran politician Buba Galadima serving as co-chairman.

The committee was established to address grievances among members and stakeholders following the party’s internal electoral processes.

The reconciliation effort is expected to complement the party’s campaign preparations as it seeks to present a united front ahead of the 2027 polls.

With the campaign period now underway, the NDC’s next major step will be the unveiling and inauguration of its campaign committees, followed by intensified grassroots mobilisation across the country.

The party’s leadership has also urged candidates and supporters to maintain discipline and ensure that the 2027 campaign is driven by policy, competence and peaceful democratic engagement.
