Opposition Lawmakers Back Ugochinyere for House Minority Leader Position
A major leadership realignment is underway in the House of Representatives as opposition lawmakers have endorsed Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere as their preferred candidate for the position of Minority Leader following the vacancy created by the exit of former Minority Leader, Hon. Kingsley Chinda.
Ugochinyere, who represents Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency of Imo State, secured the backing of a majority of opposition members in the Green Chamber and is now awaiting formal recognition by the leadership of the House.
No fewer than 61 of the 81 opposition lawmakers drawn from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), National Democratic Coalition (NDC), Labour Party (LP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Action People’s Party (APP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and Accord Party have reportedly endorsed his nomination.
The lawmakers subsequently forwarded their decision to Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, for official announcement in accordance with the rules and conventions of the House.
Sources within the opposition caucus disclosed that extensive consultations and negotiations preceded the endorsement, with members seeking a consensus candidate capable of providing effective leadership and strengthening the voice of the opposition in the National Assembly.
The lawmakers maintained that the nomination process complied with House procedures, which empower minority parties to select their principal officers and communicate their choices to the Speaker for formal recognition.
The development comes amid ongoing political realignments within the opposition ranks following recent defections and changes in party affiliations that have altered the composition of the House.
With the nomination now before the Speaker, attention has shifted to the House leadership, which is expected to formally announce the new Minority Leader in the coming days.
Political observers say Ugochinyere’s emergence, if ratified, could significantly reshape opposition coordination and legislative engagement in the House as lawmakers prepare for key debates and policy discussions in the months ahead.
