U.S. Embassy Issues Security Advisory Ahead of Planned ‘Take It Back’ Protest in Abuja
The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a security advisory ahead of a planned protest by the “Take It Back” movement scheduled to take place in the Federal Capital Territory on Thursday, June 4.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the embassy warned that large-scale demonstrations could result in significant traffic disruptions, roadblocks and an increased security presence in parts of the city, particularly around government and business districts.
According to the advisory, areas likely to be affected include the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Eagle Square and the Central Business District, where large gatherings of protesters and security personnel are expected.
The embassy noted that if demonstrations proceed as planned, authorities may enforce traffic diversions and restrict movement on several major roads within the city centre.
Among the locations identified as potential flashpoints are the Goodluck Jonathan Overpass near the Court of Appeal, Ahmadu Bello Way, Shehu Shagari Way, Constitution Avenue, Kur Mohammed Street, Hilton Junction and routes leading to the Presidential Villa.
The embassy advised U.S. citizens and other residents to avoid areas where protests are taking place, steer clear of large crowds and remain alert to their surroundings.
It also urged individuals to monitor local news updates, keep communication devices charged, carry valid identification and review personal security plans.
The advisory further encouraged residents to vary travel routes and times where possible and to familiarize themselves with emergency exits when visiting public buildings and crowded locations.
While warning of possible disruptions, the embassy confirmed that its Consular Section in Abuja and the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos would remain open and operational.
The planned protest comes amid growing civic activism and public demonstrations on national issues, with security agencies expected to maintain a strong presence in strategic locations across the capital.
Authorities have yet to announce any specific restrictions related to the planned demonstration, though commuters have been advised to expect delays and seek alternative routes where necessary.
