The Federal Government, in partnership with Air Peace Chairman, Dr. Allen Onyema, will honour former Super Eagles captain and coach, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi, by inducting him into the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) Sports Diplomacy Wall of Fame, a decade after his death.

The posthumous recognition is part of activities marking the 10th anniversary of Keshi’s passing and celebrating his enduring contributions to Nigerian football, sports diplomacy, and national development.

The first leg of the commemoration will take place on Sunday, June 7, 2026, with the 10th Stephen Keshi Memorial Lecture at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) in Lagos. The annual event is organised by a foundation established by the late football icon’s family and associates.

The climax of the tribute is scheduled for July 28, 2026, one day before the 10th anniversary of Keshi’s death, when his name will be formally inscribed on the NIIA Sports Diplomacy Wall of Fame.

The Wall of Fame, a national monument established by the NIIA, recognises Nigerians whose achievements in sports have significantly advanced the country’s diplomatic, political, and international relations objectives.

Keshi’s induction will make him the latest addition to a distinguished list of 69 Nigerian sports heroes already immortalised on the monument.

The Wall of Fame, located within the NIIA premises in Lagos, was established three years ago through the support of Dr. Allen Onyema and Air Peace. The facility features landscaped gardens, water fountains, and a black marble wall bearing the names of celebrated Nigerian sports personalities whose contributions transcend sporting achievements.

According to organisers, the extension of the monument to accommodate Keshi’s name, as well as the ceremony in his honour, will again be sponsored by Onyema and Air Peace.

Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s greatest football figures, Keshi captained the national team, won the Africa Cup of Nations as both player and coach, and led Nigeria to the FIFA World Cup. He also guided Togo to its first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance and played a pioneering role in opening pathways for African footballers seeking professional careers in Europe.

His recognition by the NIIA is based not only on his sporting accomplishments but also on the diplomatic and international impact of his career, which aligns with Nigeria’s foreign policy and international engagement objectives.

Meanwhile, NIIA’s Sports Diplomacy Department is reportedly considering additional inductions into the Wall of Fame. Among those under consideration are world record holder Tobi Amusan, Nigeria’s first and only female Olympic gold medallist Chioma Ajunwa, and members of the celebrated Atlanta ’96 Dream Team that won Olympic football gold for Nigeria.

The latest honour comes as Nigerians continue to celebrate the legacies of football icons who have shaped the nation’s sporting history, with the burial of former Green Eagles star Henry Onyenmanze Nwosu taking place this weekend in Imo State.
