The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has condemned the arrest of a journalist by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), describing the action as an infringement on press freedom and a threat to democratic principles.

In a statement issued by its leadership, the union called for the immediate and unconditional release of the journalist, arguing that media practitioners should not be subjected to intimidation or arbitrary detention while carrying out their professional responsibilities. The NUJ maintained that a free press remains essential to transparency, accountability, and good governance.

According to the union, the journalist was reportedly detained under circumstances it described as questionable, prompting concerns among media stakeholders and civil society groups. The NUJ said it was monitoring the situation closely and had initiated contacts with relevant authorities to secure the reporter’s release.

The union further urged security agencies to respect constitutional provisions guaranteeing freedom of expression and freedom of the press. It stressed that disagreements arising from news reports or journalistic investigations should be addressed through legal and professional channels rather than through arrests and detention.

Media rights advocates have also expressed concern over the incident, warning that actions perceived as harassment of journalists could have a chilling effect on investigative reporting and public interest journalism. They called on security agencies to maintain cordial working relationships with media professionals while carrying out their duties.

The NSCDC had not issued a detailed public response on the matter as of the time of filing this report. However, observers expect the agency to clarify the circumstances surrounding the arrest amid growing calls for transparency and adherence to due process.
