African Child Day: Oluremi Tinubu Calls for Universal Access to Water, Sanitation for Every Child
Nigeria’s First Lady, , has called for renewed commitment to ensuring universal access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene for children across Africa, describing the basic services as critical to their health, education and overall development.
In a message marking the 2026 Day of the African Child on Tuesday, the First Lady joined Nigerians and other Africans in advocating for the rights and well-being of children under the theme, “Ensuring Universal Access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Every Child in Africa.”
She noted that access to clean water, proper sanitation and good hygiene remains fundamental to the dignity, health and future of every child, stressing that no child should be denied the basic necessities required to grow and thrive.
According to her, children across the continent deserve equal opportunities to learn and develop in safe and healthy environments regardless of their social or economic backgrounds.
The First Lady emphasized the need for collective action by governments, communities, development partners and stakeholders to create child-friendly environments and strengthen public health systems.
“I believe all hands must be on deck to build child-friendly communities, strengthen public health systems, and create safe, healthy environments where every child can thrive and reach their full potential,” she stated.
She urged stakeholders to intensify efforts toward improving access to water, sanitation and hygiene services, noting that such investments are crucial to achieving better health outcomes and securing a brighter future for Africa’s children.
The Day of the African Child is commemorated annually to promote awareness of children’s rights and highlight challenges affecting children across the continent.
Mrs. Tinubu concluded her message by extending goodwill to African children and reaffirming the importance of protecting their welfare and future prospects.
“Happy Day of the African Child 2026,” she said.
