Meloni Accuses Trump of Fabricating Story She Begged Him for a Photo
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has strongly rejected a claim by U.S. President Donald Trump that she “begged” him for a photograph during the recent G7 summit, describing the story as “completely made up.”
The dispute erupted after Trump reportedly told an Italian television channel that Meloni had repeatedly sought a photo opportunity with him during the summit. In a public response, Meloni said she was “astonished” by the remarks and insisted the alleged interaction never took place. She added that neither she nor Italy “ever beg” for such attention.
The controversy has quickly developed into a diplomatic issue between two leaders who were previously regarded as political allies. Meloni criticized Trump for what she described as disrespect toward longstanding Western partners while showing greater consideration toward adversaries.
The fallout extended beyond personal exchanges. Italy’s Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, announced the cancellation of a planned visit to the United States, calling Trump’s comments offensive not only to Meloni but to Italy as a whole.
The row marks the latest strain in relations between the two leaders. While both appeared to strike a friendly tone during the recent G7 summit in France, disagreements over issues including Iran, transatlantic relations, and comments regarding Pope Leo had already created tensions between Rome and Washington.
Political analysts say the dispute could complicate efforts to maintain close ties between Italy and the United States at a time of growing geopolitical uncertainty. The White House had not issued a formal response to Meloni’s latest remarks at the time of reporting.
