Mexican social media influencer César Gastélum was shot and killed while livestreaming on social media in the northwestern city of Culiacán, Sinaloa, in an attack that has once again highlighted the dangers posed by organized crime in one of Mexico’s most violent regions.

According to Mexican authorities and multiple media reports, the attack occurred on Tuesday evening outside a fast-food restaurant, where Gastélum was broadcasting live with friends while dressed as food delivery riders as part of an online content challenge. During the livestream, two men on a motorcycle were seen approaching the group before one of them opened fire, fatally shooting the influencer. The horrifying incident unfolded in real time before hundreds of viewers.

Authorities said emergency responders and security personnel, including members of the Mexican Army and the State Preventive Police, arrived at the scene shortly after the shooting. Gastélum was pronounced dead at the location, while investigators recovered ballistic evidence and launched a homicide investigation. No arrests had been announced as of Wednesday.

Gastélum had amassed more than 500,000 followers on TikTok, where he was widely known for his comedy sketches and entertaining videos. His death has sparked an outpouring of grief from fans and fellow content creators, many of whom described him as one of Sinaloa’s rising online personalities.

Investigators have not disclosed a motive for the killing, and authorities have not publicly linked the attack to any criminal organization. However, the shooting took place in Sinaloa, a state that has experienced prolonged violence driven by rival factions of powerful drug cartels competing for territory and influence. Security experts say the region has witnessed a sharp rise in targeted killings over the past two years.

The murder is the latest in a series of attacks involving social media personalities in Mexico. Local media report that several influencers have been killed in Sinaloa in recent years, with some attacks believed to be connected to organized crime, although investigators have not established such a link in Gastélum’s case.

The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of digital content creators, particularly those operating in areas affected by cartel violence. Analysts say livestreams and public posts can expose influencers to greater security risks by revealing their real-time locations, making them more vulnerable to targeted attacks.

As investigators continue gathering evidence and reviewing the livestream footage, authorities have appealed to the public for information that could help identify the attackers. The killing has also intensified calls for stronger security measures in violence-plagued regions, where journalists, public figures and online influencers increasingly face threats from criminal groups.
