United States President Donald Trump has said Canada has been treating his country “extremely nicely lately,” striking a more positive tone as Washington and Ottawa continue efforts to resolve their trade dispute.

Trump made the remarks on Thursday, October 29, during a campaign rally in Rock Hill, South Carolina, where he was supporting Republican Senate candidate Darline Graham.

The US president attributed the improvement in relations to tariffs imposed on Canadian goods, arguing that his trade measures had encouraged Canada to treat the United States more favourably.

The comments come after months of tension between the neighbouring countries over tariffs, trade negotiations and disagreements about market access.

Despite the latest remarks, a comprehensive agreement to resolve the dispute has yet to be announced. Negotiations have been complicated by disagreements over tariffs affecting industries including steel and automobiles.

Reuters reported earlier this week that US and Canadian officials were working towards an agreement that could ease some of the duties on Canadian steel and vehicles. Sources familiar with the discussions said a deal could potentially be reached before the November 3 US midterm elections, although negotiations remained ongoing.

The dispute intensified after formal trade talks broke down in August, prompting Washington to maintain or introduce higher duties on selected Canadian imports. Canada has also imposed retaliatory tariffs on US products.

The tariffs have created economic and political pressure on both sides of the border, particularly in industries and communities that depend heavily on cross-border trade. Some US politicians representing border states have called for an end to the trade conflict because of its potential impact on local businesses and manufacturers.

Trump has repeatedly defended his tariff strategy as a way to secure better terms for the United States. His latest comments suggest that he believes the approach is producing results, although it remains unclear whether the more conciliatory tone will translate into a final trade agreement.

Neither the latest remarks nor the ongoing negotiations confirm that the dispute has been resolved. Both governments still face the task of reaching an arrangement that addresses their competing trade demands.
