Tinubu Congratulates Lula on Re-election, Seeks Stronger Nigeria-Brazil Ties
President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his re-election, expressing Nigeria’s readiness to strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation across key economic sectors.
Tinubu conveyed his congratulations in a statement issued by the State House on Monday, October 26, describing Lula as a friend and his renewed mandate as an opportunity to deepen the longstanding historical relationship between Nigeria and Brazil.
The Nigerian president said both countries, as influential members of the Global South, could work more closely to promote economic integration and advance shared interests amid changes in the international political and economic order.
Tinubu identified trade and investment, agriculture and food security, energy, oil and gas, manufacturing, science and technology, education, aviation and cultural exchange as priority areas for expanded collaboration.
He also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to working with Brazil to strengthen multilateral cooperation and advance common priorities across Africa, South America and the wider Global South.
The president expressed optimism that Lula’s new term would provide opportunities for both countries to build on existing diplomatic relations and pursue mutually beneficial economic initiatives.
“Your renewed mandate offers an opportunity to strengthen the longstanding friendship and historical ties between Nigeria and Brazil,” Tinubu said.
He wished the Brazilian leader a successful new term, conveying goodwill on behalf of the Nigerian government and people.
Lula secured re-election in Brazil’s presidential runoff on Sunday, October 25, defeating right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. Official results showed Lula winning 51.79 per cent of valid votes, representing more than 64.2 million ballots, against Bolsonaro’s 48.21 per cent.
The victory makes Lula the first person elected president of Brazil four times, following his earlier victories in 2002, 2006 and 2022. He is expected to begin his new term in January 2027.
The result, however, comes amid political divisions in Brazil, with Bolsonaro challenging the outcome and threatening to seek its annulment over disputes surrounding the extension of voting hours. Electoral authorities have confirmed Lula’s victory.
Nigeria and Brazil have maintained diplomatic relations for decades, with both countries sharing interests in agriculture, energy, trade, education and cultural exchange. Stronger cooperation could create opportunities for investment and commercial partnerships between Africa’s largest economy and South America’s biggest economy.
Tinubu’s message signals Nigeria’s intention to strengthen those ties as Lula prepares to begin another term in office.
