Republican Congressman Byron Donalds has defeated Democratic candidate David Jolly in Florida’s gubernatorial election, making history as the first Black Republican elected governor in United States history.

Donalds’ victory also makes him the first Black governor of Florida, following a closely contested election that extends the Republican Party’s control of the state’s governorship.

NBC News projected Donalds as the winner of Tuesday’s election, while the Associated Press also called the race in his favour.

With approximately 99 per cent of expected votes counted, Donalds had secured 50.1 per cent of the vote against Jolly’s 48.6 per cent, according to NBC’s election results.

The victory marks a significant political milestone in a state that has remained under Republican gubernatorial leadership for nearly three decades.

Donalds, a close ally of President Donald Trump, will succeed outgoing Governor Ron DeSantis, who was barred by term limits from seeking another consecutive term.

Trump had endorsed Donalds early in the campaign, providing significant political backing as the congressman emerged from a crowded Republican primary field.

In his victory remarks, Donalds expressed gratitude to supporters and acknowledged Trump’s support, declaring that Florida would remain a Republican stronghold.

The incoming governor campaigned on promises to improve affordability, address property taxes, reduce homeowners’ insurance costs and maintain conservative policies introduced under DeSantis.

His Democratic challenger, Jolly, a former Republican congressman who switched parties in 2018 before joining the Democratic Party, campaigned on addressing the state’s affordability challenges and reforming its property insurance system.

The contest became more competitive towards election day, with voters expressing concerns about rising living costs, insurance premiums and the direction of the state’s political leadership.

However, Donalds benefited from a significant Republican advantage in voter registration and campaign fundraising, alongside Trump’s endorsement and the party’s strong political presence in Florida.

According to the Associated Press, Donalds raised substantially more campaign funds than Jolly, who faced considerable financial and organisational challenges.

Donalds’ victory carries national significance beyond the state’s political landscape. Although three Black Americans have previously been elected governors in the United States, all were Democrats. His election marks the first time a Black Republican has won a gubernatorial election in the country’s history.

The outcome also extends the Republican Party’s hold on Florida, a state that has shifted increasingly towards the right in recent election cycles after previously serving as a major presidential battleground.

Donalds is expected to assume office on January 5, 2027, when DeSantis’ tenure ends.

His election is likely to attract attention nationally as Republicans assess the implications of his historic victory and the continued consolidation of their influence in one of the country’s most populous states.
