James Talarico Makes History as First Democrat Elected to US Senate From Texas in 38 Years
Democrat James Talarico has defeated Republican Ken Paxton in the Texas US Senate election, ending a 38-year period without a Democratic victory in a Senate race in the traditionally Republican state.
The Associated Press called the race for Talarico on Tuesday night, November 3, marking a major political breakthrough for Democrats in one of America’s most influential conservative strongholds.
Talarico, a 37-year-old Texas state representative and former middle school teacher, defeated Paxton, the state’s attorney general and a close ally of President Donald Trump.
His victory marks the first time since 1988 that Texas has elected a Democrat to the US Senate. The last Democratic senator elected from the state was Lloyd Bentsen, who won re-election that year.
The outcome also represents a significant setback for Trump, who endorsed Paxton during the Republican primary and campaigned to secure the party’s hold on the seat.
Paxton had defeated incumbent Republican Senator John Cornyn in the party’s primary runoff after receiving Trump’s backing, despite concerns among some Republican leaders that his political and legal controversies could make the seat vulnerable to Democrats.
Those concerns proved significant as Talarico built his campaign around the rising cost of living, political corruption and the influence of wealthy donors in American politics.
The Democratic candidate repeatedly argued that the country’s biggest divide was not between the political left and right but between wealthy interests and ordinary Americans struggling with economic pressures.
His message resonated with voters concerned about the cost of groceries, fuel and housing, while his campaign also sought to attract independent and moderate Republican voters.
The contest became one of the most expensive Senate races in American history, with hundreds of millions of dollars spent by candidates, political action committees and outside groups.
Republicans invested heavily in efforts to protect the seat, with billionaire Elon Musk among the major financial backers supporting efforts to elect Paxton.
However, the spending failed to prevent Talarico from securing a victory that could reshape Texas politics and strengthen Democratic influence in Washington.
Paxton’s political career had been marked by a series of legal and ethical controversies that became central to the campaign.
In 2023, the Texas House of Representatives impeached him over allegations including bribery, abuse of office and obstruction of justice. He was subsequently acquitted by the Texas Senate.
He had also faced securities fraud charges dating back to 2015, which were later resolved through a plea agreement.
Talarico’s campaign repeatedly highlighted Paxton’s controversies, presenting the Republican as a symbol of political corruption and a candidate whose record did not reflect the interests of ordinary Texans.
Paxton, in turn, sought to portray Talarico as too liberal for the state, attacking his positions on social and cultural issues.
The result carries significance beyond the Senate seat, as it ends a lengthy period of Republican dominance in statewide elections in Texas.
Republicans have controlled the state’s political landscape for decades, with Democrats struggling to translate population growth and changing voter demographics into statewide electoral victories.
Talarico’s win could provide Democrats with a new pathway for competing in traditionally Republican states, particularly through campaigns focused on economic concerns and political accountability rather than conventional partisan messaging.
The victory also strengthens the Democratic Party’s efforts to regain control of the US Senate, where the party made substantial gains in other Republican-held states during the midterm elections.
For Republicans, the defeat raises fresh questions about candidate selection, Trump’s influence over the party and the effectiveness of their campaign strategy in states that have long been considered safe territory.
Talarico’s election is therefore being viewed as a defining moment in the 2026 midterms and a possible turning point in the political future of Texas.
