A woman has died and approximately 1,700 people were evacuated after a fire broke out at a beachside hotel in the Dominican Republic, authorities said, prompting a major emergency response and a large-scale evacuation of guests and staff.

The blaze erupted at the resort, sending thick smoke through parts of the property and forcing emergency services to move hundreds of occupants to safety. Firefighters, police officers and civil defense personnel were deployed to contain the fire and assist with evacuation efforts.

Officials confirmed that one woman lost her life during the incident. Authorities have not yet released her identity pending notification of relatives. Several other individuals were reportedly treated for minor injuries and smoke inhalation, though no immediate reports indicated a large number of serious casualties.

According to emergency responders, the evacuation involved around 1,700 guests and hotel employees, many of whom were relocated to safe areas while firefighters worked to prevent the flames from spreading further through the complex.

Witnesses described scenes of confusion as alarms sounded and guests hurried from their rooms. Emergency teams guided evacuees away from affected sections of the hotel and established temporary gathering points outside the property.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. Preliminary assessments are expected to focus on the area where the blaze originated, though officials cautioned that it was too early to determine the exact cause.

Tourism is a major pillar of the Dominican Republic’s economy, and incidents involving large resorts often attract significant public attention. Government officials praised emergency personnel for their rapid response, which they said helped prevent a greater loss of life.
