Fresh Bloodshed in Plateau as Pregnant Woman, Youth Killed in Riyom Night Attack
Fresh violence has erupted in Plateau State following the killing of a pregnant woman and a young man during a late-night attack on Dyan community in Rim Village, Riyom Local Government Area.
Community sources said armed assailants stormed the village at about 10 p.m. on Friday, opening fire on residents and throwing the community into panic.
The victims were identified as 32-year-old Mrs. Happiness Pam, who was pregnant, and 24-year-old Daniel Luka.
The latest incident has heightened concerns over the recurring attacks and security challenges confronting communities in Riyom and other parts of Plateau State.
Reacting to the killings, the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) condemned the attack, describing it as a tragic and senseless act of violence against innocent citizens.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, the association said it received news of the attack with shock and deep sadness.
“It is heartbreaking that a pregnant woman carrying the hope of a family and an innocent young man with a promising future became victims of yet another senseless act of violence,” the statement said.
The group noted that the attack represented a direct assault on peace, security and the collective humanity of the people of the area.
BYM extended condolences to the bereaved families, the people of Dyan community, Rim Village and the entire Riyom Local Government Area.
The association called on security agencies to immediately track down those responsible and ensure they are brought to justice.
It also urged both the Federal Government and the Plateau State Government to strengthen security measures in vulnerable communities to prevent further attacks.
Meanwhile, the group raised fresh concerns over the reported abduction of two drivers along the Kassa axis of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.
According to the association, the victims were travelling through the area on Thursday night when they were intercepted and taken away by armed men.
The group appealed to security agencies to intensify rescue efforts and improve security surveillance along major road corridors that have become increasingly vulnerable to attacks and kidnappings.
Residents were also advised to remain vigilant and avoid late-night journeys on high-risk routes where possible.
The latest killings add to a growing list of violent incidents recorded across Plateau State in recent weeks, underscoring persistent concerns over the safety of rural communities despite ongoing security operations.
As of the time of filing this report, the Plateau State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the attack or the reported abduction.
