GHANA DEFENCE AND ENVIRONMENT MINISTERS KILLED IN HELICOPTER CRASH
A tragic helicopter crash in Ghana’s Ashanti Region has claimed the lives of eight people, including Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed. The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) helicopter, a Z-9 utility helicopter, went off radar shortly after departing Accra at 9:12 am on Wednesday, en route to Obuasi.

According to Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations for the GAF, the aircraft crashed in a forest area near Akrofuom, killing all eight people on board. The victims also include Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, and Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) party.

Other fatalities include Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, pilot; Flying Officer Twum Ampadu, co-pilot; Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, flight engineer; Mr. Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate; and the two ministers.

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah confirmed the tragic incident and announced that flags will fly at half-staff until further notice as a mark of respect for the deceased. “The president and government extend our condolences and sympathies to the families of our comrades and the servicemen who died in service to the country,” Debrah said.

The helicopter was reportedly headed to Obuasi to attend the launch of the government’s Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme. President John Mahama has cancelled his official activities for the day and has expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.

Edward Omane Boamah, a medical doctor by training, had been serving as Defence Minister since January, playing a key role in Ghana’s defence ministry amid growing concerns about jihadist activity across the northern border with Burkina Faso. Boamah had led a delegation to Ouagadougou in May as part of efforts to strengthen diplomatic ties with Ghana’s neighbors.
Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, the Environment Minister, was a respected figure in Ghanaian politics, known for his strong advocacy for national development. The cause of the crash is still unknown, and an investigation is underway.
