A major fire outbreak has engulfed the headquarters of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) in Abuja, triggering a large-scale emergency response as firefighters battled to prevent the blaze from spreading through the multi-storey building.

The incident occurred on Saturday at the bank’s headquarters, located opposite the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) headquarters in the Federal Capital Territory. Eyewitnesses reported that the fire started on the fourth floor before rapidly spreading across the upper levels of the building, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky and drawing the attention of residents and motorists in the area.

Several fire service crews were deployed to the scene in an effort to contain the inferno. Witnesses said firefighters worked for hours to prevent the flames from consuming additional sections of the building, although the intensity of the fire initially made containment difficult. Some observers claimed multiple fire trucks were involved in the operation as emergency responders struggled to gain control of the blaze.

Videos and photographs shared on social media showed flames tearing through the upper floors of the building while firefighters sprayed water from elevated positions. The images quickly circulated online, prompting widespread concern over the safety of staff, the possible destruction of critical records, and the impact the incident could have on one of Nigeria’s foremost housing finance institutions.

As of the latest official information, authorities had not established the cause of the fire. There were also no confirmed reports of fatalities or injuries, while the full extent of damage to offices, equipment and official documents remained unknown. Emergency officials are expected to conduct a comprehensive investigation once the fire is completely extinguished.

The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria plays a central role in the country’s housing finance system by administering the National Housing Fund and supporting affordable home ownership for Nigerians. Any prolonged disruption to its headquarters could temporarily affect administrative operations, although officials are yet to announce whether banking services or public-facing activities will be impacted.

Authorities are expected to release a formal statement detailing the cause of the incident, the extent of structural damage, and any measures being taken to restore normal operations after emergency assessments are completed.
