NiMet, China Move to Deploy AI Early Warning Platform for Nigeria
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) have taken steps to deepen bilateral cooperation with plans to deploy an Artificial Intelligence-powered early warning platform in Nigeria to improve weather forecasting and climate services.
The commitment was made during a bilateral meeting between the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, , and the Administrator and Director-General of the , , on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the Executive Council of the .
At the meeting, both officials reaffirmed the long-standing partnership between Nigeria and China in meteorology and agreed to expand collaboration by adopting and customizing the MAZU AI Early Warning Platform for Nigeria.
The initiative is expected to strengthen weather and climate services by leveraging emerging artificial intelligence technologies to deliver more accurate forecasts and timely early warnings.
To formalise the partnership, both parties agreed to develop a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) covering several areas of cooperation, including deployment of the MAZU platform, staff exchanges, joint scientific research, data sharing, remote sensing, aviation meteorology, knowledge exchange and scholarship programmes.
According to the two agencies, the expanded collaboration is aimed at building technical capacity, promoting innovation and enhancing the delivery of meteorological services for the mutual socioeconomic benefit of Nigeria and China.
The agreement is expected to further support NiMet’s drive to modernise its operations through digital technologies while improving early warning systems and climate resilience across Nigeria.
