The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has returned to Nigeria following a brief trip abroad, paving the way for the expected formal unveiling of former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.

Atiku arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Saturday night, where he was received by supporters and well-wishers.

His return comes amid growing anticipation over the official announcement of the party’s vice-presidential candidate after the ADC had earlier identified Amaechi as Atiku’s running mate.

Although the party has indicated that Amaechi will occupy the vice-presidential slot, the formal presentation has yet to be made by the former Vice President.

Sharing photographs of Atiku’s arrival on social media, his media aide, Abdulrasheed Shehu, said the ADC flagbearer had returned after a short overseas business trip.

“His Excellency Atiku Abubakar joyfully returned to Nigeria after a brief overseas trip, greeted warmly by enthusiastic supporters and numerous well-wishers,” Shehu wrote.

Earlier, on June 21, Shehu dismissed speculation that there was disagreement over the choice of a running mate, insisting there was no crisis within the party.

He explained that the official unveiling of Amaechi was delayed solely because Atiku was outside the country on a brief business engagement.

According to the media aide, the announcement would be made once the presidential candidate returned to Nigeria.

Atiku emerged as the ADC’s presidential candidate during the party’s primary election held in May as preparations intensify for the 2027 general election.
