Canada booked a place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Africa, with captain Stephen Eustáquio scoring a stoppage-time winner in the opening match of the knockout stage.

The tense Round of 32 encounter at Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood, California, appeared destined for extra time before Eustáquio struck in the second minute of added time, sending Canadian supporters into celebration and securing one of the most significant victories in the nation’s football history.

Canada dominated possession for much of the contest but struggled to break down a disciplined South African defence. The North Americans created several promising opportunities in the first half, including a penalty appeal after Richie Laryea went down inside the box. However, following a VAR review, match officials ruled there had been no foul and play continued.

South Africa adopted a compact defensive approach and frustrated Canada’s attack for most of the match. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and the backline produced a series of crucial interventions, raising hopes that Bafana Bafana could force the game into extra time or even spring a late upset.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 92nd minute. After South Africa failed to fully clear the ball from the edge of the penalty area, Eustáquio reacted quickest, striking a powerful volley into the bottom corner beyond the goalkeeper. The goal sparked jubilant celebrations among Canadian players and fans, while South Africa’s players were left devastated after defending resolutely for more than 90 minutes.

Canada were further boosted by the return of star captain Alphonso Davies, who made his first appearance since recovering from injury. Introduced in the second half, Davies immediately added pace and creativity to Canada’s attack, stretching South Africa’s defence and helping create the pressure that ultimately led to the winning goal.

After the match, Canada head coach Jesse Marsch praised his players for their resilience and determination, describing them as “Canadian heroes” for achieving the country’s first-ever qualification to the World Cup Round of 16. He said the victory reflected the team’s belief, discipline and continued progress on the international stage.

Despite the defeat, South Africa earned widespread praise for its performance. Bafana Bafana matched one of the tournament’s co-hosts for most of the game and produced one of their strongest World Cup campaigns in recent history. However, their hopes of reaching the Round of 16 for the first time ended in heartbreaking fashion with the late goal.

Canada will now face the winner of the Round of 32 clash between the Netherlands and Morocco in the next stage of the tournament. With confidence growing and key players returning to full fitness, the Canadians will believe they can continue their remarkable World Cup journey.
