Paraguay produced one of the greatest upsets in FIFA World Cup history on Monday night, defeating four-time champions Germany 4-3 on penalties after an absorbing 1-1 draw over 120 minutes to secure a place in the Round of 16.

The dramatic Round of 32 encounter, played in Foxborough, Massachusetts, saw Paraguay withstand relentless German pressure before holding their nerve in a tense penalty shootout that ended one of the tournament favourites’ hopes of lifting a fifth World Cup trophy.

Germany entered the match as overwhelming favourites, boasting superior squad depth, experience and attacking quality. Julian Nagelsmann’s side dominated possession from the opening whistle, controlling the midfield and creating several promising opportunities. However, Paraguay remained disciplined defensively, frustrating the Germans with compact defending and dangerous counter-attacks.

Despite Germany’s dominance, it was Paraguay who struck first. Julio Enciso rose highest to head home late in the first half, sending the South American supporters into celebration and putting enormous pressure on the European giants. The goal rewarded Paraguay’s patient approach and demonstrated their ability to punish Germany whenever space became available.

Germany responded strongly after the break and eventually found an equaliser through Kai Havertz, whose finish restored hope for the four-time world champions. The equaliser sparked wave after wave of German attacks as they searched for a winning goal before the end of normal time.

Extra time brought even more drama. Germany believed they had finally found the breakthrough when Jonathan Tah scored what appeared to be the winning goal. However, following a lengthy VAR review, the effort was ruled out, leaving German players and fans stunned while Paraguay were handed a lifeline.

With neither side able to find another goal, the contest moved to penalties, where Paraguay displayed remarkable composure. Goalkeeper Orlando Gill emerged as one of the night’s heroes, producing crucial saves as Germany faltered from the spot. Three German penalty takers failed to convert, including Havertz and Tah, before José Canale calmly converted the decisive penalty to seal a memorable 4-3 shootout victory.

The defeat marked Germany’s first-ever loss in a World Cup penalty shootout and continued a worrying trend for one of international football’s most successful nations. After disappointing campaigns in recent World Cups, another early exit is expected to intensify scrutiny on Nagelsmann and the future direction of German football.

For Paraguay, however, the victory ranks among the greatest achievements in the country’s football history. Having returned to the World Cup after missing recent editions, they have now announced themselves as genuine giant-killers. Coach Gustavo Alfaro praised his team’s resilience, defensive discipline and unwavering belief against one of the sport’s traditional powerhouses.

Paraguay now advance to the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of the France versus Sweden clash, carrying enormous confidence after eliminating one of the tournament favourites in spectacular fashion.
