Five-time world champions Brazil came from behind to defeat Japan 2-1 in a dramatic FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash, with Gabriel Martinelli scoring a dramatic stoppage-time winner to send Carlo Ancelotti’s side into the last 16. The thrilling encounter in Houston, Texas, saw Brazil survive one of their toughest tests of the tournament after Japan produced an outstanding first-half performance.

Japan looked poised to produce one of the biggest upsets of the World Cup after taking the lead in the 29th minute through Kaishu Sano, who capitalized on a misplaced Brazilian pass before driving forward and firing a brilliant long-range effort beyond goalkeeper Alisson Becker. The goal rewarded Japan’s disciplined defensive shape and rapid counter-attacking football, which frustrated Brazil throughout the opening half.

Coach Hajime Moriyasu set his team up with a compact five-man defence designed to limit the influence of Brazil’s attacking stars, including Vinícius Júnior and Matheus Cunha. The tactical approach worked brilliantly as Japan pressed aggressively, closed down space and forced Brazil into uncharacteristic mistakes.

Brazil struggled to create clear opportunities before halftime, with Japan’s organized defence limiting the South Americans mostly to speculative efforts from distance.

Brazil emerged after the break with renewed intensity.

Veteran midfielder Casemiro restored parity in the 56th minute, rising highest to head home from a well-delivered cross after Brazil increased the pressure on Japan’s penalty area. The equalizer shifted the momentum firmly in Brazil’s favour as Carlo Ancelotti introduced fresh attacking options, including Gabriel Martinelli and Endrick, to stretch the Japanese defence.

Brazil continued to dominate possession, with Vinícius Júnior striking the post and Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki producing several important saves to keep the scores level.

Just as extra time appeared inevitable, Brazil found the breakthrough.

In the 96th minute, Gabriel Martinelli latched onto a pass from Bruno Guimarães before calmly finishing past Suzuki to complete a remarkable comeback. The late winner sparked wild celebrations among Brazilian players and supporters, while devastated Japanese players collapsed to the ground after coming within seconds of forcing extra time.

The victory means Brazil advance to the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of the match between Ivory Coast and Norway as they continue their pursuit of a record sixth FIFA World Cup title.

Although Japan’s World Cup journey came to an end, the Samurai Blue earned widespread praise for their fearless display against one of football’s traditional powerhouses.

Without several key players, including Takefusa Kubo, Japan matched Brazil for much of the contest and demonstrated the technical quality and tactical discipline that have made them one of Asia’s strongest football nations. Their performance was regarded by many analysts as one of their finest in a World Cup knockout match despite the heartbreaking result.

Despite progressing, Brazil’s performance exposed several defensive vulnerabilities that stronger opponents may seek to exploit in the later rounds.

Ancelotti praised his team’s resilience and the impact of his substitutes but acknowledged that Brazil must improve if they are to challenge for the trophy. There was also concern after Casemiro appeared to suffer a leg injury late in the match, though the extent of the problem was not immediately known.

For Brazil, the victory keeps alive hopes of lifting a sixth World Cup title. For Japan, the defeat marks another painful knockout-stage exit, but their spirited display against one of the tournament favourites earned admiration from football fans around the world.
