Wyndham Clark held his nerve under immense pressure to win the 2026 U.S. Open, surviving a dramatic final-round scare at Shinnecock Hills to secure his second major championship and second U.S. Open title.

Clark entered Sunday’s final round with a commanding six-shot lead and appeared destined for a comfortable victory. However, difficult conditions and a determined challenge from fellow American Sam Burns saw his advantage rapidly shrink, raising the possibility of one of the largest final-round collapses in U.S. Open history.

The 32-year-old struggled through portions of the front nine and finished the day with a three-over-par 73. Despite the setbacks, Clark produced crucial moments when they mattered most, including a long birdie putt on the 16th hole that helped preserve his lead. He eventually finished at four-under par for the tournament, one shot ahead of Burns.

Burns mounted a remarkable charge with a final-round 67, the best score among the leading contenders. The American came agonizingly close to forcing a playoff but narrowly missed a birdie putt on the final hole, leaving him one stroke short of Clark’s total.

South Korea’s Tom Kim finished third, while world number one Scottie Scheffler, who was seeking to complete a career Grand Slam, ended the tournament tied for fourth after failing to mount a serious challenge during the final round.

The victory marks a remarkable redemption story for Clark, who endured criticism and controversy over the past year following several on-course incidents. He also became the first wire-to-wire U.S. Open champion since 2014 and only the ninth player in tournament history to achieve the feat.
