Egypt Reach World Cup Round of 16 After Historic Victory Over Australia
Egypt have reached the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Australia 4-2 on penalties following a dramatic 1-1 draw after extra time, securing the country’s first-ever victory in a World Cup knockout match.
The Pharaohs made the brighter start and were rewarded in the 13th minute when midfielder Emam Ashour headed home from a Karim Hafez cross to give Egypt an early lead. Australia struggled to create clear-cut chances during the opening half as Egypt controlled possession and looked the more dangerous side.
Australia fought back after the break and found an equaliser in unfortunate circumstances for Egypt. Defender Mohamed Hany inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, levelling the score at 1-1 and setting up a tense finish. Neither side could find a winner during regulation time, forcing the match into an additional 30 minutes of extra time.
Extra time produced chances at both ends, but neither goalkeeper was beaten again. Egypt appeared the more composed side as the match headed to penalties, where the North Africans displayed remarkable calm under pressure. Captain Mohamed Salah, who had returned from a hamstring injury to start the match, confidently converted his spot-kick with a Panenka, helping Egypt win the shootout 4-2 after Australia’s Lucas Herrington struck the crossbar with his penalty.
The victory represents a landmark achievement for Egyptian football. Although Egypt had qualified for the World Cup knockout stage for the first time under the tournament’s expanded format, this was the nation’s first knockout victory on football’s biggest stage, ending decades of disappointment at the global tournament.
Head coach Hossam Hassan praised his players’ resilience and discipline after the match, while fans celebrated across Egypt as the national team kept alive hopes of an unprecedented World Cup run. The Pharaohs will now face the winner of Argentina vs. Cape Verde in the Round of 16.
The result also ended Australia’s hopes of recording their first-ever World Cup knockout victory. Despite a determined performance, the Socceroos once again fell short in the knockout rounds, while Egypt’s players celebrated one of the most significant victories in the country’s football history.
