President Donald Trump delivered a patriotic and campaign-style address to thousands gathered on Washington’s National Mall on Saturday night, declaring that “the American Dream is back” as the United States celebrated the 250th anniversary of its independence. The speech came after severe thunderstorms forced a temporary evacuation of the National Mall, delaying festivities but failing to dampen the historic celebration.

Addressing supporters near the Lincoln Memorial, Trump said the United States had entered a new “Golden Age,” telling the crowd that America was “stronger, freer, richer, safer and prouder than ever before.” He argued that his administration had restored the country’s strength at home and abroad, insisting that the American Dream had returned after years of economic and political challenges.

The event formed the centerpiece of nationwide celebrations marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Organized under the administration’s “Freedom 250” initiative, the festivities included military flyovers, patriotic concerts, historical exhibitions, amusement attractions, and one of the largest fireworks displays ever staged in the nation’s capital. Officials estimated that approximately 150,000 people attended despite the weather disruptions.

Trump’s address mixed patriotic themes with familiar political messages. He praised American military veterans, welcomed members of NASA’s NASA Artemis II crew onto the stage, celebrated the country’s military achievements, and strongly condemned communism, describing it as incompatible with American values. He also repeated his pledge that America would never become a communist nation while promoting his administration’s agenda on election integrity and national security.

Hours before the speech, severe thunderstorms swept across Washington, forcing authorities to evacuate the National Mall for safety. After weather conditions improved, thousands returned and underwent security screening again before the evening program resumed. The delay pushed Trump’s remarks close to midnight, immediately preceding a spectacular fireworks display that illuminated the capital.

While supporters described the celebration as a fitting tribute to America’s semiquincentennial, critics argued that the event blurred the line between a national celebration and a political rally. A number of Democratic leaders and some performers chose not to participate, while opinion polls suggested many Americans believed the anniversary events had become increasingly politicized. Reuters also reported that the Freedom 250 initiative largely replaced the original bipartisan planning commission, fueling further political debate over the celebrations.

Across the country, Americans marked Independence Day with parades, concerts, community gatherings, and fireworks displays. Despite weather-related disruptions in several cities, the anniversary was celebrated nationwide as one of the most significant milestones in U.S. history, commemorating 250 years since the birth of the nation.
