Belgium delivered one of the standout performances of the FIFA World Cup knockout stage, dismantling co-hosts the United States 4-1 on Monday to book a place in the quarterfinals and underline their credentials as genuine title contenders.

The Red Devils capitalized on a string of costly American defensive mistakes, with Charles De Ketelaere producing a man-of-the-match display by scoring twice and setting up another goal as Belgium comfortably ended the United States’ hopes of a dream run on home soil.

Playing before a passionate crowd in Seattle, the United States entered the Round of 16 clash carrying the hopes of the home fans after progressing from the group stage and overcoming Bosnia and Herzegovina in the previous round. However, Belgium’s clinical finishing and composure exposed the defensive frailties that had occasionally surfaced throughout the tournament.

Belgium struck first through De Ketelaere before Malik Tillman restored hope for the Americans with a brilliantly struck free-kick that leveled the contest. Any momentum generated by the equalizer was short-lived, however, as Belgium regained the lead almost immediately, leaving the U.S. defence struggling to recover.

After taking a narrow advantage into halftime, Belgium tightened its grip on the match in the second half. Another defensive lapse gifted Hans Vanaken the opportunity to extend the lead after De Ketelaere again played a decisive role in the buildup. Veteran striker Romelu Lukaku then added the finishing touch deep into stoppage time, sealing an emphatic 4-1 victory.

The defeat was particularly painful for the Americans because it came on home soil and marked another disappointing end to a tournament that had raised hopes of a breakthrough under coach Mauricio Pochettino.

Adding to the frustration, captain Christian Pulisic suffered an ankle injury during the second half and was forced to leave the field, raising concerns about his immediate fitness despite the United States’ elimination. Pulisic finished the tournament without scoring.

Following the match, Pochettino admitted his side simply fell below the standard required against one of Europe’s strongest teams.

“We were not good enough,” the Argentine coach said, insisting that Belgium deserved the victory while stressing that distractions surrounding striker Folarin Balogun’s eligibility were not responsible for the defeat. The coach also acknowledged that discussions regarding his future have yet to be concluded after the disappointing campaign.

Belgium, meanwhile, celebrated arguably its most complete performance of the tournament. De Ketelaere’s movement, creativity and finishing constantly troubled the American back line, while Lukaku’s late strike ensured the scoreline accurately reflected Belgium’s superiority.

The victory also continued Belgium’s remarkable dominance over the United States, extending its winning streak against the Americans while securing another memorable World Cup knockout triumph between the two nations.

Belgium will now face Spain in a highly anticipated quarterfinal clash, with both European heavyweights aiming to move one step closer to lifting the FIFA World Cup trophy.
