Nigel Farage Quits Parliament, Seeks Fresh Mandate Amid Donation Allegations

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has announced that he will resign as a Member of Parliament and immediately seek re-election, describing the move as an effort to clear his name as he faces mounting scrutiny over allegations involving millions of pounds in undeclared financial support. The dramatic decision is expected to trigger a by-election in his Clacton constituency and could become one of the most closely watched political contests in Britain this year.

Farage made the announcement at Reform UK headquarters in London, insisting he had done nothing wrong and accusing political opponents, sections of the media and the establishment of orchestrating what he described as a “witch hunt.” He said resigning and asking voters for a fresh mandate would allow the public not Westminster, to decide his political future.

The controversy centers on an investigation by Parliament’s standards watchdog into claims that Farage failed to properly declare financial interests. Among the allegations is a £5 million ($6.7 million) gift from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne, which Farage has maintained was a personal gift received before he became an MP. Additional questions have also been raised about benefits allegedly provided by George Cottrell, a longtime associate who has previously been convicted of fraud. These reportedly included security services, accommodation and staffing support before the 2024 general election.

Farage and Reform UK strongly deny breaking parliamentary rules. Party officials argue that all relevant financial arrangements complied with legal requirements and that the allegations are politically motivated. Farage has repeatedly stated that the Harborne funds were intended to cover his long-term personal security and therefore did not require declaration in the manner alleged by critics.

The parliamentary standards investigation is expected to continue regardless of the by-election outcome. Under House of Commons rules, serious breaches of financial disclosure requirements can result in sanctions ranging from suspension to a recall petition, although no findings have yet been made against Farage.

Farage’s resignation comes at a politically significant moment for Reform UK. The party has enjoyed strong performances in opinion polls and recent local elections, positioning itself as a major challenger to both the governing Labour Party and the opposition Conservatives. However, analysts say the donation controversy could test the party’s momentum and Farage’s personal popularity with voters.

Opposition parties swiftly criticized Farage’s move. Labour accused him of attempting to distract attention from serious ethical questions, while the Liberal Democrats argued that the by-election should not divert focus from the ongoing investigation. Several major parties have already confirmed they intend to contest the seat, setting the stage for a fiercely fought campaign in Clacton.
