Nigerian Guild of Editors to Host 4th Lateef Jakande Memorial Lecture on Credible Elections

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has announced that the fourth edition of the Lateef Jakande Memorial Lecture will hold on July 23, 2026, with focus on the role of the media, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the electorate in strengthening Nigeria’s electoral process.

The annual lecture, scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, is themed: “The Media, INEC, Voters and the Path to Credible Elections.”

In a statement jointly signed by NGE President, Eze Anaba, and General Secretary, Onuoha Ukeh, the Guild said the event was instituted in 2023 to honour the enduring legacy of the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande—renowned journalist, former President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, former Governor of Lagos State and former Minister of Works.

According to the Guild, the keynote lecture will be delivered by Professor Sylvester Odion Akhaine of the Department of Political Science, Lagos State University, while former Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, will serve as chairman of the occasion.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is expected to attend as Chief Host and Special Guest of Honour. Other expected dignitaries include the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris; former Ogun State Governor and veteran journalist, Chief Segun Osoba; Publisher of Vanguard Newspapers, Uncle Sam Amuka; senior government officials; media executives; editors from print, broadcast and digital platforms; and representatives of civil society organisations.
