The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has announced plans to launch a 500 million dollar Agriculture Investment Fund aimed at transforming the agricultural sector and reducing the Niger Delta’s long-standing dependence on oil revenue.

The fund is expected to be officially unveiled at the Niger Delta Investment Summit scheduled to hold in Abuja next week, where the Commission will seek to attract investments from both the public and private sectors to drive commercial agriculture across the nine Niger Delta states.

The initiative forms part of the Federal Government’s broader economic diversification agenda and is being implemented with the backing of the Office of the Vice President.

According to the NDDC, the fund is designed to unlock the region’s vast agricultural potential, stimulate agro-industrial development, create jobs, strengthen food security and expand economic opportunities for communities across the Niger Delta.

The Commission said the investment summit will serve as a platform to mobilise local and international investors, development partners and financial institutions to support large-scale agricultural projects capable of driving sustainable growth in the region.

Speaking ahead of the summit, officials of the Commission said the initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to diversify Nigeria’s economy by promoting agriculture as a viable source of wealth creation and inclusive development.

The event is expected to feature addresses by the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President and the Managing Director of the NDDC, alongside key government officials, investors, development partners and stakeholders in the agriculture and finance sectors.

The Commission expressed confidence that the proposed fund would accelerate agricultural productivity, encourage private sector participation and position the Niger Delta as a major contributor to Nigeria’s food production and economic development.
