France End Morocco’s Dream Run with 2-0 Quarter-Final Victory
France became the first nation to book a place in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Morocco 2-0 in a composed quarter-final performance, ending the Atlas Lions’ impressive tournament run.
Captain Kylian Mbappé overcame an early setback after missing a first-half penalty before breaking the deadlock in the 60th minute with a superb curling strike. Just six minutes later, Ousmane Dembélé doubled France’s advantage, effectively sealing the victory and sending France national football team into the last four.
Morocco entered the match hoping to continue another memorable World Cup campaign after reaching the quarter-finals with an impressive victory over Canada. However, the North Africans struggled to create clear-cut opportunities against a disciplined French defence and managed only one shot on target throughout the contest.
Despite the scoreline, Morocco remained competitive for much of the first half, aided by several key saves from goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, who kept his side in the game after denying Mbappé from the penalty spot. France eventually found the breakthrough after increasing the tempo following the interval.
The victory marks France’s third consecutive FIFA World Cup semi-final appearance, underlining the consistency of coach Didier Deschamps and his squad on football’s biggest stage. The reigning European giants have also maintained an impressive defensive record throughout the knockout rounds.
Mbappé’s goal carried additional significance, taking his World Cup tally to 20 career goals and moving him level with Lionel Messi on eight goals in the race for the tournament’s Golden Boot.
For Morocco, the defeat brought an end to another inspiring World Cup journey. After becoming the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final in 2022, the Atlas Lions once again demonstrated their growing stature in international football by returning to the quarter-finals in 2026 and defeating several strong opponents along the way.
France will now await the winner of the quarter-final between Belgium national football team and Spain national football team as they continue their pursuit of another World Cup title. With Mbappé in outstanding form and a balanced squad performing at both ends of the pitch, Les Bleus have strengthened their credentials as one of the favourites to lift the trophy.
