Enang Presents Credentials to German President, Pledges Stronger Nigeria-Germany Economic, Diplomatic Ties

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany, Senator Ita Solomon Enang, has formally presented his Letters of Credence to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, officially assuming his diplomatic responsibilities with a pledge to deepen bilateral relations between both countries.

The credential presentation ceremony took place at the Presidential Palace in Berlin and marked the commencement of Ambassador Enang’s tenure as Nigeria’s envoy to Germany.

The event featured a ceremonial military welcome, the signing of the accreditation register at the Presidency, and the formal presentation of the Letters of Credence before President Steinmeier received the Nigerian envoy for bilateral talks.

During the meeting, President Steinmeier conveyed his appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and commended the cordial relationship between Nigeria and Germany. He recalled previous state visits and meetings between the two leaders on the sidelines of international engagements and acknowledged Nigeria’s swift processing of the incoming German Ambassador to Nigeria.

Discussions between the German President and Ambassador Enang focused on expanding cooperation in key sectors, including trade, energy, agriculture, migration, technology and industrial development.

According to Ambassador Enang, both sides explored opportunities for collaboration in Nigeria’s power sector, particularly off-grid electricity solutions and the Siemens power initiative. They also discussed agricultural development, food security and citizen diplomacy.

Migration and consular issues also featured prominently, with both countries considering pathways for skilled Nigerian professionals in medicine, information technology, artificial intelligence and other specialised fields to access employment opportunities in Germany through a structured Nigeria-Germany migration agreement.

Regional peace and security were also discussed, with Ambassador Enang highlighting Nigeria’s leadership role in ECOWAS and the need for renewed engagement with Sahel countries that have exited the regional bloc to strengthen regional stability and cooperation.

The envoy also advocated increased German investment in Nigeria’s industrial sector, particularly through the establishment of automobile assembly plants to enable local production of vehicles, trucks and heavy machinery, while promoting technology transfer and job creation.

Other areas of discussion included Germany’s role in implementing the Green Tree Agreement following the International Court of Justice judgment on the Nigeria-Cameroon boundary dispute, including humanitarian concerns arising from the Bakassi Peninsula demarcation.

Both sides also examined prospects for German investment in harnessing gas currently flared in Nigeria’s Niger Delta for electricity generation, as well as broader cooperation in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

Ambassador Enang expressed Nigeria’s appreciation for Germany’s humanitarian assistance recently conveyed by German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul during his meeting with Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, in Abuja.

The discussions also underscored the importance of sustaining high-level exchanges between Presidents Tinubu and Steinmeier to further strengthen bilateral relations.

Following the audience, the ambassador met with officials of Germany’s Federal Foreign Office and members of the Nigerian Mission in Berlin.

Speaking after the ceremony, Ambassador Enang thanked President Tinubu for appointing him as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany, describing the assignment as a great honour and privilege.

The event concluded with full diplomatic honours, including a military parade during which Nigeria’s Green-White-Green flag was ceremonially hoisted at the German Presidency. Ambassador Enang was accompanied by senior officials of the Nigerian Mission in Berlin and members of his family.
