Four Palestinians and Two Israelis Killed in Deadly West Bank Shooting

A deadly confrontation in the occupied West Bank has left four Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers dead, marking one of the bloodiest incidents in the territory in recent weeks and prompting Israel to launch a major military operation in the northern West Bank.

The violence erupted near the Palestinian village of Tal (Tell), southwest of Nablus, on Friday, amid rising tensions between Israeli settlers, Palestinian residents and Israeli security forces. The incident has further heightened fears of an escalation in violence in the occupied territory, where settler attacks and military raids have surged in recent months.

Israeli authorities said the confrontation began when a group of Israeli civilians hiking near the village came under attack. According to the Israeli military, one Palestinian allegedly seized a firearm from an Israeli security officer and opened fire, killing two Israeli soldiers before he and three other Palestinians were shot dead.

Palestinian officials, however, presented a different account, saying armed Israeli settlers entered the village and attempted to attack homes, prompting local residents to confront them. Palestinian witnesses alleged that Israeli troops then opened fire during the clashes, resulting in the deaths of four Palestinians.

Following the incident, the Israeli military announced an extensive counterterrorism operation across the area.

Troops established roadblocks around Nablus, carried out searches in surrounding villages and detained two wounded Palestinian suspects from a hospital in the city. Palestinian health officials accused Israeli forces of entering the medical facility and assaulting hospital staff during the arrests, allegations that have drawn criticism from local authorities.

The latest bloodshed comes against the backdrop of increasing attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestinian communities throughout the West Bank.

According to United Nations figures, settler-related violence has risen sharply this year, with dozens of Palestinians killed and hundreds more injured. Human rights organizations have repeatedly warned that attacks on villages, farmland and homes have become more frequent, while Israeli officials insist that military operations are necessary to prevent terrorist attacks against Israelis.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz vowed to intensify military operations following the killings.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a leading figure in Israel’s far-right coalition, called for stronger action against what he described as “terrorist infrastructure” in Palestinian communities, comments that have sparked criticism from rights groups and Palestinian officials.

The incident has renewed international concern over the deteriorating security situation in the occupied West Bank, where violence has intensified alongside the broader Israel-Hamas conflict.

Diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions have so far yielded little progress, as repeated military raids, settler attacks and Palestinian militant operations continue to fuel instability across the region. Analysts warn that without meaningful political dialogue, the risk of further deadly confrontations remains high.
