US Prepares Diplomatic Staff Pullout Amid Fears of Renewed Middle East Fighting
The United States is preparing to order some diplomatic personnel and their family members to leave American embassies across the Gulf region amid growing concerns about a possible resumption of hostilities involving Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement.
Three US officials disclosed the plan to Reuters on Wednesday, October 21, saying the State Department was preparing to issue an “ordered departure” as regional security concerns intensify.
The measure could involve the evacuation of all personnel and their families from the US Mission to Saudi Arabia, two of the officials said. However, the authorities have not publicly identified all the diplomatic missions that may be affected or confirmed how many people would be required to leave.
An ordered departure is a security measure under which designated diplomatic personnel and eligible family members are required to leave their posts because of heightened risks. It does not necessarily mean that an embassy will close or suspend all operations.
The preparations come after the US Embassy in Riyadh issued a security alert warning of possible further Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia. The warning follows recent deadly strikes, including an attack on Riyadh’s airport, according to Reuters.
The developments have heightened concerns that the conflict could spread or intensify, threatening diplomatic facilities, American personnel and other interests in the region.
The Houthis, who control much of northern Yemen, have previously launched missile and drone attacks against Saudi Arabia and other targets in the region. The movement is aligned with Iran, which has been involved in a wider regional confrontation with the United States and its allies.
Washington’s preparations suggest that US officials are taking precautions against a possible escalation, although the reported plan does not establish that a new military confrontation is imminent.
The potential departures also come amid broader security warnings issued by US diplomatic missions across the Middle East, urging American citizens to remain vigilant as tensions rise.
Saudi Arabia occupies a strategically important position in the Gulf because of its energy infrastructure, regional influence and role in security arrangements. Any escalation involving the kingdom could have implications for regional stability, international aviation and global oil markets.
The State Department had not publicly confirmed the full scope or timing of the planned departures at the time of reporting.
The situation remains fluid, and further details are expected as Washington assesses the security risks facing its diplomatic missions.
