Two Chinese Mathematicians Make History with World’s Top Maths Prize

Two Chinese mathematicians have made history by becoming the first Chinese nationals to receive the prestigious Fields Medal, often regarded as the highest honour in mathematics, after solving mathematical problems that had challenged researchers for more than a century.

Hong Wang and Yu Deng were announced as recipients of the 2026 Fields Medal during the opening ceremony of the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Philadelphia. They shared the award with American mathematician John Pardon and Canadian mathematician Jacob Tsimerman, each receiving a gold medal and a prize of 15,000 Canadian dollars.

The achievement marks a landmark moment for Chinese mathematics. While mathematicians of Chinese heritage have previously won the Fields Medal after representing other countries, Wang and Deng are the first Chinese nationals educated in mainland China to receive the award.

It is also the first time an Asian country has produced two Fields Medal winners in the same year, underscoring China’s growing influence in advanced scientific research and mathematics.

Hong Wang, 35, was honoured for her groundbreaking work on the three-dimensional Kakeya conjecture, a notoriously difficult problem in geometry and harmonic analysis concerning the smallest possible space required to rotate a line segment through every direction.

Her proof, developed with collaborator Joshua Zahl, has been described by leading mathematicians as one of the most significant advances in geometric measure theory in decades. Wang is also only the third woman in the 90-year history of the Fields Medal to receive the award.

Yu Deng was recognised for his pioneering work on equations describing the motion of gases, making major advances on mathematical questions connected to Hilbert’s famous 23 problems, a collection of challenges that have shaped modern mathematics since 1900. His research has deepened understanding of fluid dynamics and partial differential equations, with implications extending into physics and engineering.

Awarded every four years by the International Mathematical Union (IMU), the Fields Medal recognises exceptional mathematicians under the age of 40 for both outstanding achievements and future potential.

Although there is no Nobel Prize for mathematics, the Fields Medal is widely regarded as the discipline’s most prestigious award because of its rigorous selection process and the transformative impact of its recipients’ work.

The awards have been widely celebrated in China as a symbol of the country’s growing strength in fundamental scientific research.

Both Wang and Deng began their academic journeys at Peking University before continuing their careers at leading international institutions. Their success is being hailed as evidence of China’s expanding ability to produce world-class researchers capable of tackling some of mathematics’ most difficult unsolved problems.

The 2026 Fields Medal recipients represent a broad range of mathematical disciplines. Alongside Wang and Deng, John Pardon was recognised for major contributions to topology and symplectic geometry, while Jacob Tsimerman was honoured for breakthroughs in algebraic geometry and number theory.

For Hong Wang and Yu Deng, however, the honour carries particular historical significance. Their achievements not only solve problems that had resisted generations of mathematicians but also mark a new chapter in China’s emergence as a global leader in mathematical research.
