Family Survives Terrifying 16-Hour Ordeal After Jet Ski Capsizes in Thailand
A French father and his two young sons have been rescued after spending more than 16 hours adrift at sea when their rented jet ski capsized off Thailand’s popular resort island of Koh Samui.
The 50-year-old father and his sons, aged five and seven, had rented the jet ski from a local operator at about 5 p.m. on Thursday. They were expected to return at an agreed time but failed to do so, prompting the operator to alert local rescuers and authorities.
According to local officials, the family was eventually located at around 10 a.m. on Friday, after spending the night in the water.
Rescuers found the jet ski almost completely submerged, with only part of its front section visible above the water. One of the boys was reportedly sitting on the remaining portion of the craft while his father floated nearby. All three were wearing life jackets.
The family was described as exhausted and pale after swallowing significant amounts of seawater. They were taken to a hospital for medical examinations but were discharged shortly afterwards after doctors determined they were in stable condition.
Officials said investigators are examining why the jet ski capsized after operating for only about 15 minutes.
The father reportedly told authorities that he was an experienced jet ski rider and that rough waves struck the craft, causing its engine to stop.
However, the jet ski operator gave a different account to local media, saying the family appeared to have travelled beyond the area permitted under the rental agreement. Investigators are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Once the family failed to return, rescuers launched a search using speedboats and other jet skis. The search was suspended overnight before resuming the following morning.
When rescuers eventually located them, one rescuer could be heard reassuring the family that they had survived and urging them to remain calm. The survivors were provided with water before being taken ashore.
The boys’ mother and older sister had remained on the beach awaiting their return, according to reports.
The family has since been reunited and, despite the frightening experience, is reportedly continuing its holiday in Thailand.
Koh Samui is one of Thailand’s most popular tourist destinations, attracting large numbers of international visitors. The incident has nevertheless highlighted the potential dangers associated with recreational water activities, particularly when weather and operating conditions change unexpectedly.
