UK PM Andy Burnham Calls Jason Arday’s Death ‘Tragedy on So Many Levels’

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has described the death of former University of Cambridge professor Jason Arday as a “tragedy on so many levels” and called for reflection over the circumstances surrounding the academic’s final weeks.

Speaking to broadcasters during a visit to Cornwall on Saturday, Burnham said the focus should first be on Arday’s family, friends and those who knew him, while cautioning against rushing to judgment.

“It’s a tragedy on so many levels,” Burnham said. “It’s not a moment for any rushing to judgement. It’s a moment for reflection.”

Arday, 41, was found unresponsive at an address in Battersea, south London, on Friday and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Metropolitan Police said his death was unexpected but was not being treated as suspicious. The circumstances remain under investigation.

Arday made history in 2023 when he became the youngest Black professor ever appointed at Cambridge, taking up the position of Professor of Sociology of Education at the university at the age of 37. Cambridge had previously described him as a respected scholar whose work focused on race, inequality and education.

His death came shortly after he resigned from Cambridge following intense scrutiny of his academic work and personal claims. He had faced allegations that sections of his 2015 PhD thesis contained plagiarised material, allegations he denied. Cambridge had launched an investigation into his academic credentials and appointment.

Arday’s family said they were shocked by his death and accused what they described as a prolonged campaign of misinformation and abuse of taking a heavy toll on him.

The family has asked for privacy as they mourn, while Cambridge Vice-Chancellor Deborah Prentice and other political and academic figures have paid tribute to Arday.

Burnham’s comments come amid a wider debate over the treatment of academics in public life, institutional responsibility and the impact of intense media and online scrutiny.

Other public figures have similarly called for reflection following Arday’s death, while stressing that the circumstances surrounding his death should not be prematurely attributed to any particular factor.

The police have not announced a cause of death.
