Tinubu Celebrates Babangida at 85, Hails His Lasting Impact on Nigeria
President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd.), on his 85th birthday, describing the former Nigerian leader as an influential figure whose decisions continue to shape the country.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised Babangida’s military career and his leadership of Nigeria following the August 1985 coup.
The President acknowledged that Babangida remains a controversial figure in Nigeria’s political history but argued that his eight-year administration left significant marks on the country’s political, economic and geographical development.
“Like him or not, former President Babangida impacted Nigeria in ways no other leader has,” Tinubu said.
According to the President, Babangida’s administration oversaw economic expansion, infrastructure development and the establishment of several agencies and institutions that continue to play roles in national affairs.
Tinubu also credited the former military ruler with decisions that contributed to the creation and survival of several states across the federation.
He said Babangida’s contributions had secured his place in Nigeria’s history, adding that the former leader had continued to provide counsel and guidance even after leaving office.
Babangida, popularly known as “IBB,” has largely maintained a quieter public profile since retiring from active politics and military service. He resides at his Hilltop residence in Minna, Niger State.
Tinubu said the former leader’s advice remained valuable to younger Nigerians and wished him continued strength and good health.
“I wish you continued grace, good health, and renewed strength. May Almighty Allah keep you with us for many more years to come,” the President said.
Babangida served as Nigeria’s military President from 1985 to 1993, a period that remains one of the most consequential and debated chapters in the country’s political history.
His administration introduced major political and economic reforms, while also facing criticism over issues including the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election and the prolonged transition to civilian rule.
As Babangida marks 85, tributes from political leaders and Nigerians are expected to renew discussion about the legacy of one of the country’s longest-serving military rulers.
