Veteran Yoruba Poet and Ijala Chanter Chief Alabi Ogundepo Dies at 84

The literary and cultural world is mourning the loss of Chief Alabi Ogundepo, the legendary Yoruba traditional poet, actor, and master chanter of Ijala, who passed away on Monday, August 24, 2026, at the age of 84. Some reports also cite his age as 85 or 86.

Chief Ogundepo, a native of Saki in Oyo State, died at his private residence in the Agunbalewo area of Osogbo, Osun State, at about 3pm on Monday.

His death was announced by his family in a statement signed by his daughter, Mrs Dupe Ogundepo-Falana, on behalf of the Ogundepo family.

The family described the late cultural icon as “a remarkable literary voice whose poetry and writings reflected his deep appreciation of Yoruba culture, tradition, language, history and the human experience.”

Beyond his literary accomplishments, the family noted that Chief Ogundepo was “a man of dignity, wisdom and compassion” who touched many lives through his counsel, friendship, and commitment to community development.

“His presence commanded respect, while his words often inspired reflection and appreciation of our shared heritage,” the family statement read.

For more than five decades, Chief Ogundepo performed, recorded, and promoted Ijala poetry on stage, radio, and television.

He became a household name through his memorable public service jingles on Radio Oyo and NTA Ibadan, including the popular “Eso Pele Onimoto Rora Saare” campaign. He also produced the cultural programme Akiika for NTA Ibadan.

One of his children, Alabi Ogundepo Olaogun, had earlier mourned him in a tribute titled, “And the Bunch of Talents Slept.”

Following the deaths of other notable Ijala practitioners, including Ogundare Foyanmu, Chief Ogundepo remained one of the enduring voices of Yoruba oral poetry and ancestral praise traditions.

The family expressed appreciation to individuals, traditional leaders, and literary communities who have offered condolences.

“While the family mourns the passing of a beloved father, husband, grandfather, relative and friend, we are also comforted by the enduring legacy he leaves behind through his writings, relationships, values and contributions to society,” the statement said.

Funeral arrangements and other details will be announced by the family in due course. The family has requested privacy and prayers during this period.

“Chief Alabi Ogundepo may have departed this world, but his voice, his poetry and the memories he created will continue to live on,” the family concluded.
