The announcement came amid renewed discussion and speculation surrounding Grande’s appearance and health, particularly following the release of her music video for Petal. However, Grande later made clear to fans that her decision was not sudden or impulsive.

Speaking during a concert in Chicago, she said the plan had been quietly made long before the announcement and described the decision as one about establishing healthier boundaries.

She also pushed back against the idea that online negativity alone had forced her out of the spotlight, telling fans that her decision came from a place of empowerment.

The singer’s break means she will no longer star alongside her Wicked co-star Jonathan Bailey in the planned London revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park With George.

Grande had been expected to appear in the production at the Barbican in 2027, but her role will now be recast.

Her decision has since had further consequences for the production, with Bailey also announcing his departure from the project. Producers have said the musical will continue as planned with new casting.

Despite the dramatic nature of her farewell, Grande has not announced a permanent retirement from music or acting.

Instead, she is taking an indefinite break from public-facing work after completing a demanding period that has included touring, music releases and major film commitments.

Her final concert therefore represented less of a goodbye to her career than a decision to create distance from the constant attention that has accompanied her rise to global fame.
