Minneapolis Apartment Shooting Leaves 2 Dead, Multiple Injured, Including Police Officers

Two people were killed and multiple others injured, including three Minneapolis police officers, after gunfire erupted inside a high-rise apartment building near downtown Minneapolis on Wednesday afternoon.

The suspected shooter also died, according to police. Authorities were still working to establish the full circumstances of the attack and a possible motive.

Police were called to the apartment building at 15 East Grant Street, near Loring Park and the Minneapolis Convention Center, shortly after 4:30 p.m. following reports of gunfire.

Officers arrived within minutes and entered the building, where they encountered several victims. They then heard additional shots and moved toward an upper floor, where police said a haze severely restricted visibility.

Three Minneapolis police officers were injured during the incident.

Two officers suffered gunshot wounds, while a third sustained injuries from another cause. One officer was shot in the leg, while another was shot twice in the abdomen and required surgery. Officials said the injured officers were in stable condition.

The shooting also sent several civilians to Hennepin County Medical Center. One of the civilian victims died at the scene, while another died after being transported to hospital.

Authorities said the suspected gunman was also found dead. Officials have not immediately released a detailed explanation of how the suspect died, although sources cited by CBS News said the death appeared to have been from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The response brought a large law-enforcement presence to the area, with Minneapolis officers and other agencies surrounding the building.

Police said officers entered the structure despite the continuing danger because their priority was to locate victims and stop the gunfire.

According to the Associated Press, officers heard additional shots after entering and followed the sound upstairs, where the haze made it difficult to see.

Witnesses described a frightening scene as residents fled the building and police flooded the area.

One resident told reporters he had seen a man inside the building carrying a handgun before hearing a burst of gunfire and a woman’s screams. Investigators were working to determine whether the suspect had been known to residents and what led to the attack.

The Minneapolis Police Department is leading the investigation, with the FBI also assisting.

Authorities have not yet publicly established a motive for the shooting. Investigators are expected to examine the suspect’s background, his connection to the building and the events immediately preceding the gunfire.

The incident prompted authorities to urge people to stay away from the area while police secured the building and investigated the crime scene. The immediate threat to the public was later considered over.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and other officials expressed support for the victims and injured officers, while praising the police response.

The shooting adds another traumatic chapter to Minneapolis’ recent struggle with gun violence, coming just a year after a deadly shooting at a Minneapolis Catholic school that killed two children and wounded more than 20 people.

For residents of the downtown apartment complex and the surrounding Loring Park neighborhood, the focus now turns to the investigation and to understanding what triggered the deadly violence.
