FG Deploys 100 Electric Buses To Cut Transport Costs For Civil Servants

The Federal Government has inaugurated a nine member committee to implement the Renewed Hope Mass Transit Bus Scheme aimed at reducing transportation costs and easing the daily commuting burden of federal civil servants.

The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Olumuyiwa Enitan Abel, inaugurated the committee on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, with a mandate to fast track the deployment of 100 electric mass transit buses for workers across selected routes.

Under the pilot phase, 10 electric buses will initially be deployed on selected routes to test the operational model before the scheme is expanded. The initiative is expected to improve workers’ welfare, reduce commuting expenses and enhance productivity.

Abel charged the committee to work with urgency, transparency and accountability, stressing that unnecessary bureaucracy must not frustrate the implementation of the programme. He also directed members to develop an effective implementation framework, identify suitable routes and establish a transparent system for enrolment and payment.

The committee is also expected to recommend affordable fares and develop measures to guarantee the safety, security and accessibility of the buses, including provisions for persons living with disabilities.

The committee is chaired by the Permanent Secretary, Service Welfare Office, Dr Abdul Sule Garba, while Mr Nura Umar of the National Automotive Design and Development Council serves as co chairman.

Other members include Arc. Joy Baderin, Director, IMD; Emmanuel Agodi, Deputy Director, EIR; Gbenga Olowoyo, representing the JNPSNC; Joke Onireti, Bright Idehenre, Bimbo Ayere and Chinyere Nwosu, who serves as secretary.

The electric buses were launched on August 26 under the Renewed Hope Transit Programme. The Federal Government said the pilot phase would provide lessons for the wider deployment of the buses and help establish a sustainable transportation system for civil servants.
