Former SSS DG, Pioneer NIA Chief Albert Horsfall Dies

Former Director General of the State Security Service (SSS) and pioneer Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Chief Albert Korubo Horsfall, has died.

Horsfall, a respected elder statesman and prominent public servant from Rivers State, died peacefully, according to a statement issued by his son, Donald Horsfall, on Friday.

The family described his death as the loss of a beloved patriarch, while expressing gratitude to God for a life marked by distinguished service to Nigeria, Rivers State and the Niger Delta.

The late Horsfall was described as an illustrious son of the Niger Delta, a statesman, administrator and one of the founding figures associated with the development of Rivers State. His career in public service spanned several decades and earned him recognition among successive generations of Nigerian leaders.

He played a significant role in Nigeria’s intelligence and security architecture, serving as Director General of the SSS before becoming the pioneer Director General of the NIA. He also chaired the former Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commission, among other senior positions.

According to the family, Horsfall’s public career was defined by dedication, integrity and patriotism, while his leadership, experience and commitment to justice, peace and good governance earned him widespread respect.

“Throughout his lifetime, he served the nation with uncommon dedication, integrity, and patriotism, leaving behind an enduring legacy of leadership, wisdom, and selfless service,” the family said.

The family said his counsel, courage and compassion would continue to inspire those who knew him and benefited from his wealth of experience.

While mourning what it described as an irreparable loss, the family said it took solace in the impact Horsfall made during his lifetime.

Details of his burial and other funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
