Enugu Police Probe Alleged Attacks On Political Gatherings, Warn Against Violence

The Enugu State Police Command has ordered an investigation into two separate incidents involving the alleged disruption of political gatherings in Nkanu West Local Government Area of the state.

The incidents, which occurred on September 12, 2026, reportedly involved the disruption of a ward meeting in Ndiuno-Obuoffia and the destruction of facilities prepared for a political rally at St. Joseph Primary School, Agbani.

The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that anyone found responsible is brought to justice.

According to the command, armed hoodlums allegedly disrupted a political ward meeting in Ndiuno-Obuoffia with sporadic shooting, injuring two attendees. In a separate incident at Agbani, hoodlums reportedly destroyed canopies and chairs arranged for a political rally.

The police said operatives were immediately deployed to both locations after receiving reports of the incidents to prevent further breaches and pursue the fleeing suspects. The command, however, noted that neither gathering had been formally reported to the police for security coverage.

Giwa warned political parties, candidates, supporters and other stakeholders against violence, intimidation, destruction of property and other acts capable of disrupting public peace and the electoral process.

The police commissioner urged political parties to notify the command ahead of campaigns, meetings, rallies and other political activities to enable adequate security arrangements.

He assured residents that the command would continue to provide a secure environment for lawful political activities and deal decisively with anyone found violating the law.
